Following our FREE evaluation, a data recovery specialist will contact you with a Quote detailing the evaluation results, data recovery costs and the estimated time to complete the data recovery. If at this point you do not proceed with the data recovery, your drive will be returned back to you at our expense. If you agree to the data recovery, we will proceed towards recovering your data and provide you with information on the outcome of the recovery. Only when we have recovered the data you need will you be charged for the data recovery.

Providing a fixed rate for data recovery service is difficult because every data loss case is unique and requires different procedures. Two key elements making up the price for a data recovery are typically the parts and time investment followed by the cost of skilled technicians. Lastly, there is the cost of the drive that the recovered data is transferred to. Data Recovery Pricing Components

While data recovery pricing can start at $450, complex cases requiring multiple head transplants, platter transplants or recovering data from RAID units may well run into the thousands of dollars.

What can you do to lower the cost of your data recovery?

  • Refrain from further attempts to access your problem storage device. If there are mechanical problems, this may lead to more damage and a costlier recovery.
  • Provide your own good drive for the recovered data. (see FAQ: What is my recovered data returned on?)
  • If you are not in a hurry to get your data back and can wait for when we are not so busy, this will also lower your price.

Examples of Data Recovery Pricing

Hard Drive Data Recovery Pricing Examples

HDD Scenario 1
The submitted storage device exhibits logical damage where file tables have become corrupt thus making the data inaccessible to you.
Recovery Technique: Every file and folder is represented by a 2 byte FILE RECORD. A search for these individual file records is conducted through every sector on the drive. File records are then verified and corrupted records are either repaired or deleted depending on the severity of the damage. The resulting file records are then categorized into records for files and records for folders. Using these results, we are then able to rebuild the complete Master File Table and gain access to all remaining data files and folders.
Pricing: This is priced normally between $450 and $900.

HDD Scenario 2
The laptop computer was sent to a manufacturer for warranty repairs and the manufacturer re-imaged the hard drive to a brand new state.
Recovery Technique: Assuming the new image installed by the manufacture did not write over the entire drive, we should be able to resurrect some of your data. Our 1st step is to fill all the sectors used by the new image with a unique pattern we can identify later. This allows us to identify and recover only the remaining original data. We then search for file records and rebuild any remaining folder structures to gain access to the remaining data.
Pricing: This is priced normally between $600 and $1,100.

HDD Scenario 3
The submitted storage device exhibits physical damage to one or more of the read/write heads with little damage to the internal media.
Recovery Technique: We perform one read/write head transplant from another drive that is matched as closely as possible to the original. After the successful transplant, we encounter few read errors with minimal data loss.
Pricing: This is priced normally between $900 and $1,600.

HDD Scenario 4
The hard drive exhibits damage to the circuit board and read/write heads. We also discover some damage to the internal media affecting the System Area of the drive.
Recovery Technique: We perform a circuit board transplant and then read/write head transplants from other drives matched as closely as possible to the original. Once the drive is physically functional, the System Area is then repaired in order to gain access to the data. If there is a lot of damage present to the media surface, more parts transplants may be required before all the available data can be recovered.
Pricing: This is priced normally between $1,000 and $1,500 and up, depending on the exact issues faced. Sometimes recovering data from these cases can run several thousand dollars.

RAID Data Recovery Pricing Example

RAID 0 Scenario
One of two drives making up an external RAID 0 storage device exhibits physical damage and most of the data is inaccessible.
Recovery Technique: With RAID 0 we must have images from both drives in order to recreate the complete data volume. Our first step is to repair the damaged hard drive and create a mirror image of it. The 2 drive images are then analyzed to determine the striping scheme and the RAID is then de-striped to a larger storage device OR mounted virtually, in order to recover the data.
Pricing: This RAID 0 data recovery is priced normally between $1,200 and $2,000. Pricing for RAID 5 data recoveries, on the other hand, is priced in the many thousands.

USB Data Recovery Pricing Examples

USB Scenario 1
The USB device exhibits physical damage as a result of someone knocking against the device.
Recovery Technique: Further analysis reveals some of the USB connection leads have been broken and one of the electronic components inside the device, the controller, is no longer responding. The connection leads are reattached and the bad controller is removed by de-soldering it and new controller is soldered into its place. Access to the data is now restored and it is copied off.
Pricing: This is priced normally between $325 and $400.

USB Scenario 2
The USB device exhibits no physical damage but has just stopped working.
Recovery Technique: Further analysis reveals that the device has likely been the victim of a power surge. The device's circuitry is beyond repair. We remove the two memory chips and read the raw contents using a chip programmer/reader. The raw data from the two devices are then analyzed to determine how it was combined to create the one data volume. A Memofix proprietary utility is then used to rebuild the data volume onto a new storage device.
Pricing: This is priced normally between $500 and $700 depending on the capacity of the original device.
